The Threshold of Return: When the Road Home Becomes Filled with Thorns

It seems to me that we have all experienced the difficulty of returning to gathering for various reasons. In this post I reflect on the topic.

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." Matthew 11:28

This promise of Jesus resonates with special strength in those who, after a period of separation, long to return to the church, to that spiritual fold they once considered home. However, what should be a joyful return, a reunion with the family of faith, often becomes a journey full of obstacles, a road paved with doubts and fears.

The Reasons for the Inner Exile

Like sheep that stray from the flock, the reasons that lead to separation are varied and complex. For some, the frantic pace of modern life, with its work and family demands, wove a web of distractions that imperceptibly led them away from the path. Others, wounded by negative experiences within the church —a severe judgment, a lack of support in difficult moments, or the feeling of not belonging— keep in their hearts the bitterness of the disconnect.

Fear, like an elongated shadow, also looms over the threshold of return. Fear of others' judgment, fear of not being understood, fear of not living up to the expectations, real or imagined, that the church projects. And in many cases, guilt and shame become invisible chains that bind the feet, whispering in the ear the lie that there is no longer a place for them in the Father's house.

A Path of Restoration

But the church, as a reflection of God's heart, is a place of forgiveness and restoration. It is the hospital of the soul where wounds find balm, where grace abounds and unconditional love extends to all, regardless of their past. The longing to return, that flame that still burns in the heart, is the seed of hope that God Himself has planted.

Steps toward Reconciliation:

  • Remember the essence: The church is not a building nor a set of rules, but the body of Christ, a community of believers united by love for God and neighbor.
  • Pray for guidance: Seek the direction of the Holy Spirit to find the way back and the strength to overcome obstacles.
  • Approach with humility: Recognize one's own faults and the need for forgiveness, both from God and from those one may have offended.
  • Seek support: Trust in a pastor, a leader, or a brother in the faith to share struggles and receive accompaniment in the process of returning.
  • Forgive: Release the heart from resentment and bitterness toward those who may have caused pain.

The road back can be arduous, but the reward is priceless. Jesus' promise remains valid: "I will give you rest." Do not let fear or shame prevent you from rediscovering your place in God's family. He waits for you with open arms. The Threshold of Return: When the Way Home Becomes Thorny
